Our Daily Bread

Give us this day our daily bread.  Matthew 6:11

Luke 11:3 says, “Give us day by day our daily bread.”  It does not say give us our weekly, monthly, or every other day bread.  We need to be in the Word of God every day!  You cannot live off yesterday’s bread.  When God rained down manna from Heaven, He gave specific instructions.  Exodus 16:16 says, “This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Let every man gather it according to each one’s need, one omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let every man take for those who are in his tent.’”   Then in verse 19 Moses said, “Let no one leave any of it till morning.”  So they were to gather what their families needed for that day only.  They were not to hoard it up and live off Sunday’s bread the whole week.  However, they did not listen.  Exodus 16:20 says, “Notwithstanding they did not heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them.”

Just like the Children of Israel, you can’t live off yesterday’s bread or righteousness.  Ezekiel 18:24 says, “But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All the righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die.”  You need to be in the Word and obedient to it today.  It doesn’t matter if you were righteous yesterday.  What are you going to do today?  In Revelation 3:15-16 God says, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”  You may have been hot yesterday, but you need to choose to be hot today.  You do not fill up your bathtub with hot water today to take a bath tomorrow.  Your water will be cold by then.  The Word is no different.  You need a fresh infilling daily from the Word of God or else you might start stinking.

Do Not Be Lukewarm

I could wish you were cold or hot.  Revelation 3:15b

In Revelation 3:15-16 God says, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”  So are there three ways you can be in this world?  I can be cold and not care about God’s plan at all.  I can be hot and on fire for God, or I can be lukewarm and undecided.  If you picture this scripture with a water faucet, you only have two options.  You can be hot or cold.  You become lukewarm by mixing the two.   This would be the people who may be obedient in some areas of their lives (Hot), but then in other areas they are disobedient (Cold).  The mixture of this hot and cold is what creates the lukewarmness, which in God’s eyes is worse than being cold.  But I go to church.  Even flies go to church!  Going to church does not give you a ticket to sit at the table with Jesus in Heaven (Luke 22:30).  God is addressing the church in Revelation 3:15-16, so lukewarm applies to churchgoers.

God never intended us to have a mixture.  He wants us to be hot.  When we create a mixture, the cold will dilute the hotness.  Galatians 5:9 says, “A little leaven leavens the whole lump.” You can read James 1:6-8 which says, “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”  You can be hot and walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7) now, but then in an hour be cold and doubting.  This is being lukewarm or doubleminded.  You should not expect to receive anything from God.  You are worse than someone that doubts all the time and will be vomited out of God’s mouth!  Why?  You are giving God a bad name.  Unbelievers can see you go to church, but your life is not where it should be.  Be obedient (hot) to God and His Word and do not let sin / disobedience (cold) come in and make your life lukewarm.
