April 2017 Words of Life (Week 4)

The Foundation of Your House

He will be the sure foundation for your times…  Isaiah 33:6a

Jesus said in John 14:2 that His Father’s house has many mansions.  We take this to mean that we will be living in a prepared place when we get to Heaven.  Yes, but according to Matthew 6:10, He wants us to build our house here and now and occupy till He comes (Luke 19:12-13).  The question is, what foundation are you building your house upon?  Matthew 7:24-27 says, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”  Is your foundation Jesus, the Rock, or the sandy land?  Paul addressed foundations in 1 Corinthians 3:11. “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  The only true foundation is Jesus Christ.  Psalm 127:1 describes those who build their house without Jesus.  “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”  All our work is in vain if Jesus, the Word, is not our foundation.  This would be like building our house on the sand and then having it blow away.  How do we make the Rock our sure foundation?

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior by confessing and believing (Romans 10:9-10), we are walking in agreement with His plan for our lives (Amos 3:3, 1 Timothy 2:4).  We are now a new creation, and have graciously been given a new, clean start because of what Jesus did for us (2 Corinthians 5:17).  Our past house on the sandy land is covered under the blood of Jesus (Revelation 1:5 and Hebrews 9:14).  We now have the sure foundation, the solid rock to build our house (God’s house) upon (Isaiah 33:6 and Matthew 7:24).

Building Upon the Foundation

Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.  Proverbs 24:3

Once we have Jesus as our sure foundation (Isaiah 33:6), we now we have the responsibility to build upon the Rock.  This is a continual process that must be walked out daily by obeying the Word of God (John 8:31-32) and being led of His Spirit (Romans 8:14).  1 Corinthians 3:12-14 “Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.”  The only thing that will endure is the Word of God.  Mark 13:31 says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”  As with the three little pigs, if you build your house with anything but the Rock, the Word, your house will be blown away by the big, bad wolf (Satan).

If we disregard the Word and build our house our own way, we know that it will be in vain from Psalm 127:1.  We must continue to put our desires down (Galatians 5:24) by throwing away our blueprints and using God’s blueprint (His Word) for our lives.  As we do this we are allowing the Lord to build our house.  We can trust God to build our house (Hebrews 3:4), since He has already framed the world through His Word.  Hebrews 11:3 says, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”  Once the Lord gives you the wisdom through His Word, you can build your house and frame your life (Proverbs 2:6-7).  Proverbs 24:3-4 “Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; By knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” You must seek God and His Word (Matthew 6:33) to find out how to eternally build your entire house.  Choose today that your house will be a storm shelter that will withstand the wiles of the big, bad wolf / devil (Ephesians 6:11).
