Curtains [Sin] Block Light
When one turns to the Lord [Word], the veil is taken away.” 2 Corinthians 3:16
Curtains or drapes have 2 main purposes. They provide a decorative purpose that appeals to the flesh, they look good. Curtains also provide a practical purpose of blocking sunlight from entering a room. Sin fulfills the same 2 purposes; it appeals to our flesh and blocks the light from our lives by separating us from the Son (Isaiah 59:2). Sin also has a third purpose that is death. Romans 6:23a says, “For the wages of sin is death…” James 1:15b says, “…Sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.” Romans 8:6a says, “For to be carnally minded is death…” What gets mistaken is that the death is usually not immediate. It is a slow death that takes place over a period of time. Sticking with the curtains example, place a live plant in a room with curtains covering the windows. This plant will eventually die. The plant must have light to power the photosynthesis process of converting carbon dioxide and water into food.
In John 15, Jesus referred to Himself as the vine and we the branches. We are like that plant in the dark room when we choose to allow sin in our lives and block the Son with curtains [sin/idols (Jonah 2:8)]. If we do not repent, we will experience a death, whether it be immediate or over time. Like the plant, we need food and light. Matthew 4:4b says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Jesus, who is the Word of God (John 1:1) is the Light. John 8:12b says, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Light and darkness cannot coincide. John 1:5 says, “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” We cannot walk in the light while maintaining sin in our lives. The sin acts as a curtain or a veil to block the Light. We do not need curtains or veils in our Christian walk. So, what do we do? “We confess our sins [and] He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Then we walk in 2 Corinthians 3:16 says, “When one turns to the Lord [Word], the veil is taken away” and “we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7)
