December 2017 Words of Life (Week 1)

Great peace have they who love Your law; nothing shall offend them or make them stumble. Psalm 119:165

According to Psalm 119:165, if we love God’s Word nothing will cause us to stumble or be offended. But what does it mean to love God / God’s Word (John 1:1, John 1:14)? The 14th chapter of John answers that question. Verse 15 says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” Verse 21 says, “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” Then Jesus said in John 14:23a says, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.” So, if we are keeping God’s Word, we are truly loving God. If we are truly loving God, nothing will cause us to stumble or be offended. Think of it like a rain jacket. If we walk outside in a rainstorm wearing a rain jacket, the jacket will repel the raindrops. The parts of our body that are covered by the jacket will remain dry. This is what the Word of God does for us. If we are obedient to the Word, the Word acts as a repellent to the offenses and stumbling. Isaiah 59:19b says, “When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.” The standard that is lifted up is God’s Word!

If a rain jacket just covers our upper body, our legs and face are still susceptible to the rain. If we are not obedient to the Word in every area of our lives, we are susceptible to the attacks of the enemy. The enemy is strategizing on how to deceive us (Ephesians 6:11) so he can steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). If you are in the middle of a rainstorm, would you stop and take off your rain jacket? No, you would get soaked! If you are in the midst of a spiritual battle, should you reject and take off the Word of God? No! WE ARE IN A SPIRITUAL BATTLE. Satan is shooting fiery darts (Ephesians 6:16) and offense is swirling around to entrap us (Luke 17:1). Do not take off your offense resistant jacket (the Word of God). Be obedient to the Word. James 4:7 says, “Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
