1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” God cleanses us from ALL unrighteousness, so we can live a life without sin, not to go back and forth from righteousness to unrighteousness. This is what Jesus told the woman who was caught in adultery in John 8:11. Jesus said, “Go and sin no more.” Equate this to a child jumping in a mud puddle. Would the child’s parent wash the child off and tell them to jump in the puddle again? NO! God does not intend for you to go back to sin either. He intends for you to “Go and sin no more!” Just as God told the children of Israel to not return to Egypt (Deuteronomy 17:16), we should not be foolish and return to our sin. Proverbs 26:11 says, “As a dog returns to his own vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.”
Peter takes it a step further in 2 Peter 2:20-22, “If, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: a dog returns to his own vomit, and, a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.” It would be better for you to not know the truth, than for you to have known the truth and turned back to sin! There is a false teaching saying that you cannot walk free of sin. The enemy has infiltrated some Christian teachings by saying you can play in the mud and sin after God has cleansed you from it. This is a lie and is trampling underfoot the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:26-31). God’s plan is for you to abstain from sin (1 Thessalonians 5:22) and “be perfect, just as your Father in Heaven is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48). This is possible, but only through you choosing to follow and do the Word of God. Do not believe a lie, believe the Word and go and sin no more.
